VMware recently announced general availabilty for the new Horizon Cloud Services Next-Gen Platform. In this blog series I want to explain the new features and benefits and why now is the perfect time to onboard your very first Horizon Cloud environment!
What is Horizon Cloud (Next-Gen)?
VMware Horizon is a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution that allows organizations to deliver and manage virtualized desktop environments and applications to end-users on various devices, such as laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones. In simple terms, it enables employees to access their work desktop from any device, anywhere, as if they were sitting in front of their physical work computer.
VMware Horizon Cloud provides a global administration of all your desktops and applications that are hosted on different on-premises and cloud enviroments. VMware hosts the so-called "Horizon Cloud Control Plane" which runs the central management of remote desktops and applications in your environment (e.g. Microsoft Azure).
In this new architecture, the Management of the environment is completely moved to the Horizon Control Plane. This means that a lot of components such as connection servers, gateways, application volumes and databases are removed from the user environment and switched to the control plane. A new management component called “Horizon Edge Gateway” is introduced which is responsible for communication with the Desktop VMs and the control plane, deployment of Unified Access Gateway (UAG) and Single Sign On (SSO) functionalities.
This modern approach saves a lot of your local data center requirements (and therefore also costs 😉) and makes upgrading the Horizon Infrastructure way simpler!
