Airlift Hands-On Lab - Part 4

The purpose of this series of posts is to explore and use Workspace ONE AirLift into a Lab environment to migrate devices, applications, and policies (GPOs) from ConfigMgr and Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS) to Modern Management with Workspace ONE.

1 - Hard Disk Configuration

The following manipulation have to be done on MOB-SRV-MECM-01 Server.

1.1 - Storage Configuration Overview

Here is the list of all Hard Disk to have on MOB-SRV-MECM-01 Server. Keep in mind that the following values are my own recommendation. If you can add more storage spaces for each disk, feel free to do so.

I:\ MECM_SQL_LDF 20 GB 64K
Total 220 GB

1.2 - Add Hard Disk

Let's describe a step-by-step configuration for Drive D:\ as an example. However, the following steps must have to be done for all other Drives i.e. E:\, F:\, G:\, H:\, I:\.

  1. Shut down MOB-SRV-MECM-01 Server.
  2. From Fusion Virtual Machine Library, right click on MOB-SRV-MECM-01
  3. Click on Settings...
  1. Click on Add Devices...
  1. Click on New Hard Disk.
  1. Select the correct Disk size. In that case, for D:\ Drive, select 40 GB.
  2. Click on Apply.
  1. Repeat the above steps for Drives:
    • E:\
    • F:\
    • G:\
    • H:\
    • I:\
  2. As a result, you should have the same configuration than on the below screenshot.
  1. Restart MOB-SRV-MECM-01.

2 - Disk and Volume Configuration

The following manipulation have to be done on MOB-SRV-MECM-01 Server.

Let's describe a step-by-step for Drive D:\ as an example. However, the following steps must have to be done for all other Drives i.e. E:\, F:\, G:\, H:\, I:\.

  1. Open Server Manager.
  2. Click on File and Storage Services.
  3. Click on Disks.
  1. Locate the disk where Capacity match the Drive's capacity to configure. In that case, for D:\ Drive, Locate a 40 GB Disk.
  2. Verify if the disk is Online. if not, right click then click on Bring Online.
  3. Once the disk is Online, right click then click on New Volume...

2.1 - Before you Begin Step

  1. Click on Next >.

2.2 - Server and Disk Step

  1. Leave the default values.
  2. Click on Next >.

On Offline or Uninitialized Disk window:
3. Click on OK.

2.3 - Size Step

  1. Leave the default values.
  2. Click on Next >.

2.4 - Drive Letter or Folder Step

  1. Assign the correct Drive letter. In that case, assign the letter D.
  2. Click on Next >.

2.5 - File System Settings Step

  1. Next to Allocation unit size, select the correct value by referring to the tab on chapter 1.1. In this case, select Default.
  2. Next to Volume label, enter the correct value by referring to the tab on chapter 1.1. In this case, select MECM_Install.
  3. Click on Next >.

2.6 - Confirmation Step

  1. Click on Create.

2.7 - Results Step

  1. Once the new volume wizard has been successfully completed, click on Close.

2.8 - Manage Drive Letter

  1. Go back to Server Manager.
  2. Select the newly configured Disk. If the Disk don't appears correctly configured, click on the refresh icon.
  3. Under Volume view, select the only volume listed.
  4. Right click on the volume.
  5. Click on Manage Drive Letter and Access Paths...
  1. Next to Drive letter, assign the correct Drive letter. In that case, assign the letter D.
  2. Click on OK.

2.9 - Verification

To verify if the installation and the configuration of the new Hard Disk has been successfully done:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click on This PC.

Now, follow the above steps to install and configure Drives E:\, F:\, G:\, H:\, I:\.

Important: Be sure to refer to the tab on chapter 1.1 for Storage Name, Size and Allocation unit size values per Drive.

Once all Drives has been installed and configured successfully, here is the result:

3 - Disk and Volume Post-Configuration

The following manipulation have to be done on MOB-SRV-MECM-01 Server.

3.1 - Drive E:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to MECM_TempDB (E:) Drive.
  3. Create a new folder named DB.

3.2 - Drive F:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to Content_Library (F:) Drive.
  3. Create a new folder named WSUS.

3.3 - Drive G:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to WSUS_Database (G:) Drive.
  3. Create a new folder named WSUS_Database.

3.4 - Drive H:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to CM_SQL_MDF (H:) Drive.
  3. Create a new folder named MECM_DB.

3.5 - Drive I:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to CM_SQL_LDF (I:) Drive.
  3. Create a new folder named MECM_DB.

4 - Download And Prepare Mandatory Sources

The following manipulation have to be done on MOB-SRV-MECM-01 Server.

4.1 - Create Sources Folder

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click on Documents.
  3. Create a Folder named Sources under Documents.
  4. Pin Sources folder to Quick access.
  1. Navigate into Sources folder.
  2. Create a folder named MECM.
  3. Create another folder named MECM_Update_Files.

4.2 - Download SQL Server 2019

  1. Open Chrome Web Browser.
  2. Navigate to Microsoft Evaluation Center website.
  3. Click on Products tab.
  4. Under SQL Server section, click on SQL Server 2019.
  1. Select EXE.
  2. Click on Continue.
  1. Complete the form.
  2. Click on Continue.
  1. Once download is completed, show the downloaded EXE file in folder
  1. Cut and Past SQL2019-SSEI-Eval.exe file into Sources folder.
  1. Execute SQL2019-SSEI-Eval.exe file.
  2. Click on Download Media.
  1. Under SELECT LANGUAGE, select Anglais (English).
  2. Under WHICH PACKAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO DOWNLOAD?, select ISO.
  3. Under SELECT DOWNLOAD LOCATION, select Sources folder.
  4. Click on Download.
  1. Once package is successfully downloaded, click on Close.

On SQL Server Installer window:
18. Click on Yes.

  1. Go back to File Explorer.
  2. Into Sources Folder, delete SQL2019-SSEI-Eval.exe file.

4.3 - Download SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)

  1. Open Chrome Web Browser.
  2. Navigate to Microsoft Download Center to download Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Reporting Services.
  3. Select English as language.
  4. Click on Download.
  1. Move SQLServerReportingServices.exe to Sources folder.

4.4 - Download SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

  1. Open Chrome Web Browser.
  2. Navigate to SSMS Microsoft Documentation on Available languages Section to download Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  3. Select English (United States) as language to start Download.
  1. Move SSMS-Setup-ENU.exe to Sources folder.

4.5 - Download Windows ADK and WinPE

  1. Open Chrome Web Browser.
  2. Navigate to ADK Microsoft Documentation on Other ADK downloads Section to download Windows ADK and WinPE.
  3. Click on Download the Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 2004.
  4. Click on Download the Windows PE add-on for the ADK, version 2004.
  1. Move adksetup.exe and adkwinpesetup.exe to Sources folder.

4.6 - Download Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM)

  1. Open Chrome Web Browser.
  2. Navigate to Microsoft Evaluation Center website.
  3. Click on Products tab then under Endpoint Manager section, click Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (Current Branch).
  1. Select EXE.
  2. Click on Continue.
  1. Complete the form.
  2. Click on Continue.
  1. Move MEM_Configmgr_2103.exe to Sources folder.
  1. Execute MEM_Configmgr_2103.exe file.
  2. Unzip the content of MEM_Configmgr_2103.exe into Sources/MECM folder.
  1. Once all files are unzipped successfully, click on OK.
  1. Close Winzip Self-Extractor - MEM_Configmgr_2103.exe window.
  2. Go back to File Explorer. Into Sources Folder, delete MEM_Configmgr_2103.exe file.

4.7 - MECM Update Files Extraction

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to Sources > MECM > SMSSETUP > BIN > X64 and locate setupdl.exe file.
  1. Click on File menu then click Open Windows Powershell and finally click Open Windows Powershell as administrator.
  1. On Windows Powershell enter the following command then click enter:
.\setupdl.exe "C:\Users\MECMAdmin\Documents\Sources\MECM_Update_Files"

4.8 - CMTrace.exe

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to Sources > MECM > SMSSETUP > TOOLS and locate CMTrace.exe file.
  3. Copy Paste CMTrace.exe into Desktop.
  4. Pin CMtrace to taskbar.

5 - PolicyDefinitions Preparation

The following manipulation have to be done on MOB-SRV-DC-01 Server.

  1. Open Chrome Web Browser.
  2. Navigate to Google Chrome Download Center.
  3. Click on Manage Policies tab
  4. Under Policy templates section, select Chrome ADM/ADMX templates.
  5. Click on Download.
  1. Click on Accept and download.
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click on Downloads.
  3. Unzip policy_templates.zip folder.
  1. Open policy_templates folder.
  2. Open windows folder.
  3. Open admx folder.
  1. Open a new File Explorer window.
  2. Navigate to C:\Windows\SYSVOL\sysvol\ad.mobinergy.com\Policies folder.
  3. Create a folder named PolicyDefintions.
  4. Open PolicyDefintions folder.
  5. Copy Past all the content from Downloads\policy_templates\windows\admx to C:\Windows\SYSVOL\sysvol\ad.mobinergy.com\Policies.
  1. Delete policy_templates folder and policy_templates.zip from Downloads folder.
  2. Close all windows.

6 - Update Architecture Diagram

Regarding modifications, here is the updated Architecture Diagram:

7 - Conclusion

  • Add and configure MOB-SRV-MECM-01 Hard Disks.
  • Download and prepare MOB-SRV-MECM-01 Mandatory Sources.
